Podcast “Bone marrow transplantation: when the new immune system runs out of control”
On the occasion of the release of a new episode of the France Culture podcast Avec Sciences, David Michonneau, Professor of Hematology at Université Paris Cité, hematologist at Hôpital Saint-Louis and researcher at the Institut de Leucémie, and Sophie Legrand, physician and doctoral researcher at Université Paris Cité, share their expertise to provide valuable insight into one of the most frequent and complex complications following bone marrow transplantation: graft-versus-host disease (GVHD).
Bone marrow transplantation is today a major source of hope for many patients with leukemias and other blood disorders. However, it can be associated with significant complications. Among them, graft-versus-host disease occurs when the donor’s immune cells attack the patient’s tissues.
The episode highlights recent work suggesting that resistance to treatment may emerge very early in the course of the disease. These findings open important perspectives for more rapid adaptation of therapeutic strategies.
