The Saint-Louis Institute, formerly known as the University Institute of Hematology (IUH), takes its name from its historic location at Saint-Louis Hospital in Paris.

Jean Bernard (1907–2006) was a leading figure in French medicine, renowned for his pioneering work in hematology.

He was one of the founders of modern hematology in France.

In 1961, he established the University Institute of Hematology (IUH), which later became the Paris Saint-Louis Leukemia Institute. His goal was to bring together fundamental research, clinical practice, and education.

Jean Dausset (1916–2009) was a French physician, immunologist, and geneticist, internationally renowned for discovering the HLA system (Human Leukocyte Antigens), a major breakthrough in immunology and transplant medicine. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1980.
