Diseases managed
Department activities
The Senior Hematology Department at Saint-Louis Hospital, the only one of its kind in France, is dedicated to the management of patients aged 60 years and older with myeloid malignancies.
As a national reference center for MDS and leukemia in elderly patients, its missions are to improve daily care, facilitate access to therapeutic innovation through clinical and basic research, explore genetic predispositions, better understand the links between these diseases and inflammatory disorders.
This ambitious medical project strengthens the quality of care while advancing scientific knowledge on these complex diseases.
The department has 20 inpatient beds, including 8 intensive care beds and 7 day-hospital beds (outpatient facility).
The medical team includes 3 university professors, 2 attending physicians, 2 clinical chiefs, and 2 residents.
The allied health team, managed by Pierre Novacovici, includes 25 nurses (two dedicated to care coordination), 11 nursing assistants, and 3 medical-administrative assistants.
The department is part of DePHI department (Medical-University Department of Hematology and Immunology), which includes 8 adult hematology and immunology departments at Saint-Louis, along with the hematology departments of Robert-Debré and Avicenne hospitals.
It is the largest structure dedicated to hematological diseases in Europe.

Clinical trials
Clinical research is one of the department’s core priorities. It focuses on patients with acute leukemia and MDS, supported by a team of five clinical research staff. Activities include:
- Industry-sponsored trials, conducted in the department or, for first-in-human studies, at the Clinical Investigation Center of Saint-Louis Hospital,
- Academic trials initiated by French cooperative groups (GFM for MDS, ALFA for leukemia) or European groups (EMSCO, HOVON),
- Academic trials promoted by the IHU.
We regularly offer phase 1, 2, and 3 clinical trials for these patients, whether sponsored by industry or academia. However, availability may vary depending on:
- trial opening/closure schedules,
- sometimes very specific eligibility criteria,
- logistical constraints (drug supply, regulatory approvals, etc.).
Therefore, each clinical situation requires regular reassessment to identify the most suitable trial options for patients.

Featured research projects
Strengthening clinical and basic research with the goal of maintaining and expanding the department’s role (and that of Saint-Louis Hospital more broadly) as a center of excellence for patient care and research, in close collaboration with the IHU.
Diagnosing and managing genetic predispositions to myeloid malignancies, now better identified through DNA sequencing. These predispositions, present in around 10% of patients, require specific follow-up for treatment, transplantation, and family genetic counseling. The U694 functional unit, created in 2021 at Saint-Louis Hospital and led by Prof. Marie Sébert, coordinates this complex and urgent care pathway. It works closely with pediatric hematologists at Robert Debré Hospital for cross-disciplinary management. This unique model in France is expanding rapidly and has benefited from additional resources since 2024.
This project aims to better understand (and treat) the links between myeloid malignancies, inflammatory manifestations, and age-related clonal hematopoiesis. Dr. Lin Pierre Zhao leads this emerging clinical and fundamental research activity, in collaboration with several hospital departments and INSERM units.
